Onsite Recap: Advancing Decarbonization in Bern
Last week, Railsponsible members met in Bern for two inspiring days hosted by SBB CFF FFS, dedicated to one shared goal: accelerating decarbonization across rail supply chains.
Collaboration for Impact
The onsite brought together 15 participants from 9 companies, representing a diverse mix of rail operators, OEMs, and suppliers. Together, they exchanged insights on how procurement and collaboration can drive meaningful reductions in carbon emissions throughout the value chain.
The event was opened by Simon Roth, Chief Procurement Officer at SBB and Railsponsible Treasurer, who emphasized the vital role of procurement in steering the industry toward a low-carbon future — and the challenges that lie ahead.
Focus on “Carbon in Tenders”
A key focus of the two days was the continued development of the Carbon in Tenders Guidelines.
Discussions centered on the need for a shared understanding of key terminology and explored practical ways to embed decarbonization elements in tendering processes. This updated version of the guidelines aims to give companies clear options for integrating carbon criteria into procurement decisions — ensuring consistency and measurable progress across the industry.
Shared Challenges, Shared Solutions
Beyond the technical work, participants reflected on the common challenges many organizations face on their decarbonization journey — from data and supplier engagement to aligning internal priorities. Open discussions highlighted how collaboration and transparency can turn shared obstacles into collective progress.
A True Swiss Experience
Of course, no onsite in Switzerland would be complete without a traditional cheese fondue dinner overlooking Bern — a perfect setting to deepen connections and celebrate shared commitment to a more sustainable rail sector.
Looking Ahead
The Bern onsite reaffirmed the power of collaboration within Railsponsible. Together, members are taking tangible steps toward a lower-carbon rail industry — translating ambition into action, one initiative at a time.
A warm thank you to SBB CFF FFS for hosting and to all participants for their openness, energy, and engagement.
